Did you wake up this morning and weigh yourself?
And then realize…
Oh fuck!!!
Shouldn’t have eaten THAT…
or
...How have I gained weight, because I've been training hard and eating REALLY GOOD
...And then feel like utter crap and spend the next few days beating yourself up and maybe
starving yourself?
Or else think fuck it and eat whatever you want, because what’s the point…?
But here’s the thing, and here’s why the scales are an utter scam…
(And if you want to develop a better relationship with them, read on to the last 3 points…)
To actually gain a pound of fat you would have had to consume 3,500 calories OVER AND
ABOVE your daily maintenance caloric requirements…
And while that could happen over a week, it’s pretty damn difficult to do in the space of 2
days…
Here’s where it gets sticky….
The health and fitness industry is worth a whopping $225 BILLION and that's set to double by 2030...
That’s a lot of different interests, that is…
An industry with interests that have impacted our PARENTS and their beliefs...
...that we've had engrained into us, that we've grown up influenced by
And we’re sold…
In order to be successful
Happy
Content
Worthy
Beautiful
Attractive
ACCEPTABLE
We have to lose weight
Or else attain this societal constructed image of what beauty is
We don’t know about you but that sounds like a crock of shit to us!
...But we haven't always seen it that way and if you're currently knee-deep in constant diet mode, it is ABSOLUTELY NOT your FAULT
...We ALL have the power to change the narrative, NO matter HOW LONG or HOW HARD you have been dieting
The problem is…
So many of us are basing OUR WORTH on a number, because we just don't know ANY OTHER way
A number we've aspired to, become connected with and possibly even associate with HAPPINESS, because after all we've lived with this as OUR TRUTH
A number that was initially derived to measure the gravitational weight of ASTRONAUTS in
space.
ASTRONAUTS!!!!
In SPACE
Basing our worth on a figure designed to measure space walking seems a touch absurd
especially since I’m guessing most of us AREN’T employed in space
And fundamentally?
Our understanding and internalisation of the scales as to whether we’re “good” or bad” has
been based on lies we have been fed in order to keep us small and powerless…
But you ARE POWERFUL, you know deep down there is another way
Because if we’re obsessing about the scales…
What ELSE is that keeping us from?
What other energy and attention is being robbed due to chasing a number?
Energy for our careers?
Energy for running our business?
Energy from our families?
Our relationships?
The truth is, there are so many things the number on the scales has absolutely NOTHING
to do with
And honestly?
Understanding is KEY to developing a healthier relationship both with our bodies
AND the scales.
Here’s how to do that:
Step 1:
Familiarise yourself with what scales are ACTUALLY weighing
Consider this:
Your body is made up or 5-6 meters digestive tract.
If you’re full of shit, literally, the scales will show a higher number due to that undigested
food.
The scales also measure the weight of your brain mass, blood, bones, internal
organs, hair… ALL THAT JAZZ.
What else affects your weight?
Exercising or training intensity - can cause you to temporarily retain water
Lack of sleep - can cause you to retain water
Where you are in your menstrual cycle - we can weigh up to 2-3kgs more depending on
what phase of our cycle we’re in
Eating more carbs - we store 3g of water per 1 gram of carbs consumed
Dehydration - Dehydration can make the body hold on to extra water to make up for the
lack of incoming water
ALL these factors contribute to a higher number on the scale, telling us there are
MULTIPLE aspects the scale measures.
Understanding things from this perspective allows us to break the emotional tie (and
tyranny!!) the scales have over us.
Step 2:
Understand what your real goal is so you can use the right tool to measure your
progress
There are so many other ways to track progress
Maybe your goal is to get STRONGER, or to do a pull up or push up.
In that case track your numbers in the gym, how much weight you’re lifting week on week.
Or maybe you want to lose weight for summer or your wedding.
You can track progress by photos, or taking measurements, or seeing how your clothes fit.
The important thing here to ask yourself is it the weight loss or is it the FEELING that
you are looking for that you associate with weight loss such as happiness, or self
confidence.
Identifying what it is you want and WHY will be key to not only making massive progress
but staying grounded, motivated, and driven in the process.
Because there’s nothing worse than getting to your goal, temporarily feeling good, and then
empty.
Step 3:
Chuck the scales!….or take a sledgehammer to them ;)
Rather than play the game of basing your worth on the scales, get them out of the equation
completely!
Once you understand HOW they work and what they REALLY measure and what your
REAL goal is and WHY, you can let go of any hold they have over you since you simply
don’t NEED them to play a part in your life.
Whether you choose to throw them away or smash them is up to you, but the sense of
FREEDOM you get from no longer being tied to them day after day, week after week, is
wholly and utterly UNRIVALLED.
